2015 Taiwan-Europe Cultural Exchange and Community Service Scholarship Program

March, 2015

I. Introduction of European Centre at NSYSU

The European Centre at NSYSU is affiliated with the Office of International Affairs National Sun Yat-sen University and a member of European Union Centre in Taiwan. The European Centre at NSYSU cooperates with other partner universities to promote understanding of the EU within society. The centre also works together with other offices in NSYSU to provide in-depth information about the EU to the faculty and students. The goals of the European Centre at NSYSU are as follows:

i. Become the information platform of the EU in Southern Taiwan.

ii. Facilitate academic cooperation and exchange between Taiwan and the EU.

iii. Promote and reinforce understanding and research of the EU.

II. Program Initiative

The “Elementary and junior high school cultural service program by European Student of European Centre at NSYSU” is initiated with a hope to expand the international outlook of Taiwanese teenagers and enhance their understanding of each member country of the EU through vivid and interesting courses in European culture. Since the offering of this program, faculty, students and parents have all registered their approval and immense satisfaction. The level of service has also expanded year on year. In 2011, about 200 elementary school students benefited from the program. In 2012, junior/senior high school students were also included and a total of 1500 students combined with elementary school students participated. In 2013, again approximately 1500 students are included in this program. In 2014 the scope of this service program further expanded to promote an understanding of European culture and increase the international outlook for more teachers and students of elementary and junior high schools in more areas. About 2776 students benefited from this program.

Within NSYSU, the Center will select and train teams of three people. Each team consists of 1 European student, 1 Taiwanese student and 1 international student (any nationality will do). After training is completed, teams will carry out 6~8 hours of featured cultural courses in various elementary and secondary schools in Kaohsiung with carefully prepared teaching plans, presentations and teaching materials. During the courses, the faculty of respective schools will grade presenting teams.

The program provides an opportunity for Taiwanese and European students of NSYSU students to have face-to-face interaction with local school students. The interaction will first broaden the international outlook of Taiwanese school children. Secondly NSYSU students can develop international project planning skills. Thirdly it is a great chance for the European students to experience and gain a deep knowledge of the nature of the educational environment in Taiwan. Intangible benefits also include the growth of international friendship between all parties.
